Doctor Goes Viral After Losing 55Lbs in 42 Days and Wins a Competition
After losing 55 pounds in 42 days, a young Chinese doctor became viral for his quick weight loss. He subsequently entered and won a professional bodybuilding competition.
By the end of 2024, Wu Tian Gen, a 31-year-old surgeon at Wuhan University’s Zhongnan Hospital in Hubei, weighed 97.5 kg (215 lbs), the most he had ever weighed. However, by the end of January 2025, the 1.82-meter-tall physician had lost over 42 kg and was in such fantastic physical shape that he had won a bodybuilding competition.

How did he accomplish that? It was a combination of physical training, personal ambition, and a well-planned diet, albeit he didn’t disclose all the specifics. Nevertheless, it’s still quite amazing to lose so much weight in 42 days.
The surgeon who typically performs gastric bypasses to assist obese patients reduce weight, realized he needed to lose a few pounds to prevent major health issues.
After tests showed that his liver was obese, he set out to reduce his weight in order to compete in a bodybuilding event. Initially, he completed two hours of training every day in addition to his daily responsibilities, which included daily research and consultations, two days of ward visits, and three surgeries every week.
To encourage blood circulation, Tian Gen would rise at 5:30 a.m., do an hour of cardio, go to work, do another hour of cardio. Before bed he would take a shower and soak his feet in hot water to boost circulation. He increased his training from two to four hours a day in the days before the competition.
Despite not disclosing many details about his diet, the 31-year-old doctor’s coach, Shi Fan, a well-known Chinese athlete, claimed that training was the major factor to his weight loss success.
“Wu trains harder than a lot of professional athletes,” Shi said.
When asked why he started his quick weight loss program, Tian Gen stated that he wanted to serve as an example for overweight individuals who are having trouble losing weight. Paradoxically, he stated that he opposed “drastic, short-term methods” that advocate for people to consume “very little.”
