Trained as a synthetic organic chemist specialising in the assembly of architecturally complex molecules, Dr Senanayake quickly built a reputation as the person companies turned to when a process seemed impossible. At Merck, he received the prestigious Merck Management Award for his work converting Compactin into Mevacor (lovastatin), extending the lifecycle of a blockbuster cholesterol drug.
At Sepracor, his entrepreneurial mindset helped scale the company from 70 to more than 1,000 employees in six years. He later spent over 16 years at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals as Vice President of Chemical Development (US), directing North American process chemistry, CMC strategy and technology transfer for global manufacturing. During that time, his teams accelerated the development of Jardiance, which generated over $3.2 billion in sales in 2019 alone, reaching $9 billion for the year 2024.
Across his career, Dr Senanayake has authored more than 500 scientific publications, holds 150+ patents, and has an H-index of 75, alongside serving on editorial boards and becoming a recognised authority in asymmetric synthesis, catalysis and scalable green chemistry.

Hazardous steps were moved into flow, impurity control tightened, and the sponsor reached Phase I supply ahead of schedule at lower cost, with a stronger process-patent position.
