China’s Internet Famous Bamboo Milk Tea (竹筒奶茶)

Earlier this year in 2023, a trendy new milk tea came onto the scene at tourist spots all over China: the Bamboo Milk Tea, or Zhu Tong Nai Cha 竹筒奶茶. I wanted to try it for myself – see my video at the end! Scenic sites all over China began offering it, and it exploded online. It became trendy because of its bamboo cup that is customized for the city you buy it in. Each bamboo cup has the cities’ name across the front, and includes a sign that says, “I Miss You In _____” (whichever city you’re in). I was at Qianmen Street in Beijing and found a shop so had to try it. I got their popular strawberry one for 38 RMB ($5.33 USD). You never know if these trends will be worth the hype, but I thought it would be interesting to check out for myself! It wasn’t too bad just very sweet. Inside was a frozen blended strawberry tea drink topped with whipped cream. It was interesting because mine came in a plastic cup inside the bamboo cup, while other people around China commented on my Instagram and WeChat video to tell me that in their city, the drink came directly in the cup. There has been backlash online about the hygienity of this, as well as the wasted Bamboo Cups thrown around these tourist sites. I think they started using these plastic cups as a way to make it more clean, and to encourage people to return the cup (this is just my hypothesis though). What do you think, would you try this bamboo milk tea?
