5 Cardinal Sins in the Bedroom

As we consider the Feng Shui sins you might be committing in your bedroom, we’re going to start with undoubtedly the hardest item on your “to do” list… 1. Ditch the TV This should not be your view in the bedroom… My clients are usually pretty bummed when I tell them they need to get rid of the TV in the bedroom….but the reason is clear! The bedroom is for only 2 things: loving and sleeping. Period! If you’re wondering why your relationship is so lame, take a look at your bedroom! So, to summarize: “Get the TV out of your bedroom!” Instead, focus on your partner! Whew. Moving on…. 2. Your Work The second big no-no is having your desk in the bedroom. Or, to be more specific, anything to do with work! That includes your laptop. How can you relax, when you’re sitting in bed and you can see your desk, your paperwork, and things that stress you out? You can’t. So nix the desk. 3. Electronics And yes, this means your phone!  Blue Light Suppresses Melatonin: It is well-established that light plays a powerful role in the regulation of our internal circadian rhythms. Electronics like televisions, smartphones, tablets, computers and even LED lights emit blue light, which is believed to be particularly important when it comes to sleep. Stimulation and Stress Keep Your Mind Awake: Active and engaging electronics like tablets, laptops, smart phones, and televisions stimulate your mind and distract you from sleeping. A recent Norwegian study correlated computer and mobile phone use before bed in particular with increased insomnia. Don’t let this happen to you…. 4. Anything broken, old, ugly, dirty, etc. If you don’t like it, pitch it. Plain and simple. You should be surrounded with gorgeous things, things which make you happy, and things which inspire sleep and rest. 5. Anything scary, dangerous, or stupid! Over the years, I’ve seen some pretty incredible things in bedrooms. For example: harakiri swords, mounted on the wall a poster which read “A woman gets raped every 98 seconds in the United States” a dirty laundry basket in the relationship area old love letters under the bed a carpet which hadn’t been vacuumed in 7 years dead plants Use your common sense. If it doesn’t seem like it belongs in your bedroom, it probably doesn’t! So……what does belong there? Well, for starters, it probably goes without saying that you should have a professional Feng Shui consultation. Since we spend 1/3 of our lives in the bedroom, it’s crucial to make sure this room supports you, and doesn’t drain you. Secondly, the design of the bedroom should reflect your taste, as well as being restful and beautiful. Romance. Did we mention romance? The bedroom should have a romantic feel to it….to encourage “coupling”, as we say in Feng Shui-speak.
